Fair kids get down to business
The theme for this year’s Contra
Costa County Fair in Antioch is The
Treasure in Your Back Yard. There are
many treasures in our back yard, and
our local 4-H kids are one of them.
While most kids age 9 to 18 are
sleeping in on Saturdays and watching
cartoons, many youths from all over the
county are getting up early each morning
before school and on weekends to
feed, water and care for their livestock
animals to sell to the public on the fair’s
last day, June 1.
Kids from 4-H, Grange and FFA
purchase their animals at least 60 days
prior to the fair, and from the day their
animal arrives, the work begins. They
tame their animal, feed it a measured
amount of grain and keep track of the
weight so that their animal weighs in at
the fair in the desired weight class.
Brittney Ray, 16, of Knightsen 4-H
plans to enter her steer, Curley, whom
she expects to weigh approximately
1,050 pounds at the fair. Along with
beef, there will be lambs, pigs, turkeys
and meat goats for sale at the auction.
The public is encouraged to attend and
support the kids and their projects. They
work hard raising their animals and
record all their expenses and time – in
short, they learn how to run a business.
When fair goers bid on these animals
and are the winning bidder, they
