Grooming kids
for kindergarten
The Antioch First 5 Center and School Readiness Program
are sponsoring a free School Readiness Fair to provide
parents of pre-kindergarten children valuable information and
resources. The fair takes place Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School, 1413 F St. in Antioch.
Children will participate in fun, engaging activities while
parents learn more about kindergarten readiness. Community
agencies will provide information on health, safety, early education,
parenting and other local services. The fair’s fi rst 200 children
ages 3 to 5 will receive a free backpack fi lled with educational
materials and learning activities to do at home. Healthy
snacks will be provided.
Kindergarten teachers will be on hand to provide information
for parents about what children are expected to know in
kindergarten and how parents can best prepare their children
for school. A recent evaluation of First 5 Contra Costa’s school
readiness efforts revealed that children show greater child development
skills when they attend schools that reach out to families
before kindergarten entry.
The Antioch First 5 Center and School Readiness program,
both funded by First 5 Contra Costa, provides parents
with the tools they need to support their child’s early development
and prepare them for kindergarten. Research shows that
a child’s brain develops most dramatically in the fi rst fi ve years,
and what parents and caregivers do during these years to support
a child’s development makes a lasting impact.
Based on this research, California voters passed Proposition
10 in 1998, adding a 50-cent tax on cigarettes to support
programs for expectant parents and children up to age 5. First 5
Contra Costa invested more than $9.6 million last year in Prop.
10 revenues to programs and services that meet local needs. For
