Coffee with
the cops
The community is invited to join Antioch
Police Captain Steve McConnell and
Detective Jeff Stanton on Saturday, July 26
from 9 to 11 a.m. in a casual setting to learn
how to protect themselves from identity
theft and receive tips on Internet safety.
This upcoming workshop in the casual
Coffee With the Cops series will be held in
the theatre of the Nick Rodriguez Community
Center, 213 F St.
Meetings are scheduled on a monthly
basis at different locations throughout the
city.
Fatality from page 6A
of the Hullens were wearing life jackets at
the time of the crash, said Powell, although
Hullen’s body was recovered without the
jacket.
“It’s all still under investigation, but it
(the life jacket) could have come off during
or after the accident,” said Powell. “We’re
reconstructing the accident and we’re hoping
some of those questions will be answered.”
Powell added that there was no indication
that alcohol was involved in the crash.
The importance of safety on the Delta
hit especially close to home for one Discovery
Bay resident who was out in Indian Slough
just moments before the accident occurred.
“I was boating in that area and I can tell
you it was a busy day, but there was plenty of
680
room for safe navigation,” said Jeff Barber.
The fatality is the fi rst of the year, and
only the second PWC-related death in the
past fi ve years, said Powell. According to
a California Department of Boating and
Waterways, 55 victims died in state boatingrelated
accidents in 2007; 39 of whom were
not wearing life jackets. Powell said the
importance of life jackets and safety on the
water cannot be underplayed.
“The most important thing I can tell
boaters is to educate yourself before you
go out on the water,” he said. “Know what
you’re doing and keep a good eye out. The
Delta can be a busy area with lots of winding
twists and turns. You can’t be too careful.”
