Diamonds from page 1B
girls coming out to join us because we
were having a good time.”
The Diamonds played their most
memorable game of the year at the
Modesto Tournament at Rainbow
Fields last month, a tournament the
girls also happened to win.
In the quarterfi nal game, the Diamonds
took a 6-2 lead into the home
half of the fi nal inning against the California
Bandits, but the Bandits refused
to go quietly. The Bandits scored three
runs and loaded the bases with just one
out, when their batter smashed a ball
deep to left centerfi eld, where centerfi
elder Danni Leones made a sterling
catch and rifl ed the ball back to the
infi eld to hold the game-tying run at
third base. Star pitcher Kenna Wright
recorded a big strikeout against the next
batter, ending the game and propelling
the team into the semifi nal round with
all the momentum it would need to close
out the tournament.
“It was all lights out from there forward,”
said Kaleialii.

Third baseman Kaitlyn Bourque
led the Diamond offense in Modesto,
posting a breathtaking .810 on-base
percentage. Shortstop Maleia Namauleg
anchored the team defensively and
batted a robust .420 for the tournament,
and catcher Niki Kaleialii batted .500
and played extremely well behind the
plate.
Still, in Kaleialii’s mind the team’s
unquestioned MVP was Wright, who
pitched supremely well all season and
kept the team in just about every game
it played.
The Delta Diamonds will be holding
tryouts for their fall team Aug. 2 and
9 at Freedom High School. The tryouts
will run from 9 a.m. to noon both days,
and girls ages 13 and under who are
dedicated and passionate about softball
and eager to further develop their skills
are encouraged to attend.
