Friends survey Marsh Creek
by Beth Lichtenberger
Correspondent
On Saturday, Sept. 27 at Morgan
Territory Regional Preserve, volunteers
from Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed
conducted a GPS survey in order to map
the creek’s topography. The technology
enables scientists to make sure the creek’s
restoration is functioning and its viability
has improved. The program is the
fi rst and only of its kind in Contra Costa
County, and serves as a model for other
restoration programs in the Bay Area.
It is hoped that the data collected
from the survey will help educate farmers
on decreasing runoff of topsoil,
which pollutes creeks with silt, pesticides
and other harmful chemicals.
“I feel that every one in Brentwood
is a part-owner of this creek,” said Brian
Curran, scientist and member of Friends
of Marsh Creek Watershed. “In parts of
Brentwood, the creek runs so small and
narrow that people mistake it for common
drainage.” Curran believes it’s vital
that citizens of Brentwood realize that
what they dump into their storm drains
isn’t treated before it reaches Marsh
Creek and directly impacts its animals
and plants.
“To help maintain and restore
Marsh Creek’s natural beauty, one can
get involved with the Friends of Marsh
Creek and become aware of their actions
