Alumni games mean old-time excitement
by Avi Burk
Staff Writer
Antioch High School hosted a special
double-header on Saturday, May 3, when
the current varsity and junior varsity teams
took on alumni from decades past in the
program’s inaugural alumni game under
the supervision of second-year head coach
Ben Juarez.
The day began with a showdown between
this year’s JV team and alumni from
as far back as the ’50s, and it proved to be a
thrilling event that came down to the fi nal
frame. The JVs got out to a fast start, scoring
four runs in the fi rst inning and tacking
on an additional three runs in the third.
The JV team scored its eighth and fi nal run
in the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Nick Fambrini – then it was the old timers’
turn to put in some work with their bats.
After scoring three times in the fi fth,
the alumni team broke through in the seventh
and scored an additional six runs,
thanks in large part to key hits by Logan
Hildenbrand, Gene Moss, Bob Gonzaga,
Jonathan McKinnon and James Byroads,
and stole a 9-8 win from the young Panthers.
Bo Nobriga led the way for the JV
Panthers, going 2-for-3 with three runs
scored in the contest.
During the intermission between
games, current varsity standouts Chad
Combs of Freedom, whose father Butch

Combs played catcher on the 1984 NCS
Champion Panther team, and Panther
catcher and designated hitter Robby Pena
treated the 300-plus spectators on hand
to a thrilling home run derby display, as
Combs edged out Pena 7-6 for the win.
The break in the action also featured
a special celebration of the school’s fi rst
NCS title, as former varsity coach John
Whitman presented his 1984 championship
team and a banner recognizing that
historic group. The banner will hang on
the outfi eld fence during all future Antioch
home games.
The varsity nightcap proved every bit
as exciting as the JV opener, as the current
varsity Panthers and recent alumni traded
leads six times before all was said and done.
In the end, the varsity Panthers broke up a
9-9 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning,
scoring the go-ahead, walk-off run to
claim the 10-9 win.
“It was amazing,” said Juarez. “We
had a lot of people there and I’ve been told
it was the most highly attended alumni
game they’ve ever had at the school. A lot
of those older guys had some fun and hit
the ball – everybody had a really good time.
Richard Burke did a great job putting it together.
I was going to do it every other year,
but the response that we’ve gotten from the
alumni was so strong that we’re going to do
it every year that I’m there.”
