Letters from page 22A
Memorial area.
This fi ne veteran’s organization has
donated funds toward the replacement
of a monument commemorating both
military personnel and civilians who gave
their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist
attack on the World Trade Center
in New York City; the Pentagon in
Virginia and a fi eld in Pennsylvania.
The original plaque, which was donated
by the Brentwood Funeral Home,
was stolen late last fall. It had been on
display in the Veteran’s Memorial area
of the cemetery and was stolen presumably
for scrap metal due to its all-bronze
composition.
The replacement plaque has no
metal content and is made with a
newer technology. That method allows
monument dealers to etch an image on
polished granite using a laser beam.
The image on the new plaque, installed
Memorial Day weekend, is a near replica
of the original memorial.
This incident was one of many
thefts, burglaries and vandalism sprees
over the past 2½ years that have caused
much tighter night and weekend security
on the cemetery grounds.
Thank you again, veterans groups,
for your kind and continuing support of
this local cemetery.
