Local amateurs roll with the pros

PBA Hall of Famer Dave Soutar got the ball rolling at the
PBA Northern California Senior Classic Pro-Am on Sunday at
Harvest Park Bowl. Soutar became the PBA’s youngest National
Champion, capturing the title at the tender age of 21 in 1961.

For many sports enthusiasts,
the closest they get to the
athletes they idolize is watching
them on TV or from a stadium
seat. But last Sunday, more than
200 fans got a lot closer during
the PBA Northern California
Senior Classic Pro-Am Tournament
at Brentwood’s Harvest
Park Bowl.
For a fee, guests got to do
the unthinkable – bowl three
games with some of the PBA’s
brightest senior stars.
“It was a lot of fun,” said
amateur Ashley Jones. “It was
a cool experience getting to do
it. Tom Baker told me how to
shoot a better shot.”
In a prelude to the 2008
PBA Northern California Senior
Classic, which took place
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,
a handful of the tournament’s
86 professional bowlers
took to the lanes with amateurs
young and old.
In two-hour increments,
Tom Baker, Kenny Parks and
Keith Sharp, among others,
rotated from lane to lane while
talking with visitors and showing
off their skills.
In all, each of the participants,
who were broken up into
groups based on age, got to play
three games with three different
PBA stars.
“It’s giving them an opportunity
to interact with the
pros and have a good time,” said
Harvest Park Bowl owner Jim
Wangeman.
Amateur participant Joe
Shadd agreed. “I really enjoyed
it because I’ve been following
them for years,” said Shadd.
“It’s a great experience. It really
is.”
Although the importance of
posting high scores took a back
seat to fun on Sunday, Derek
Radulski walked away with fi rst
place and a $300 prize, and Brad
Morelock fi nished second, earning
$200 in the process. Others

Lightning strikes twice in Santa Cruz
by Avi Burk
Staff Writer
Brentwood’s Lightning ’93
15U boys soccer team stormed
the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
at the recent Santa Cruz
Beach Pro-Am Soccer Tournament,
winning the event for the
second consecutive year.
Beach soccer began on the
sandy shores of Brazil more
than 30 years ago and has
grown into a popular sport
around the world, as evident
both by the size of the Santa
Cruz Pro-Am’s fi eld (more
than 250 teams) and the caliber
of competition.
“We always go down there
and have a good time and try
our skills at a different style
of soccer on the beach,” said
head coach Mike Krahnke.
“We went in knowing we’d won
last year and were pretty confi -
dent, and we made it to the fi -
nals and won again, which was
pretty cool.”
Saturday morning, Lightning
played Juventus Elite 92-
14 from Burlingame and won
3-0, but the Lightning didn’t
strike in earnest until later that
morning. During the team’s
second match against Danville
Mustang Revolution, the sky
grew dark and cloudy and rain
and lightning bolts came crashing
down onto the beach. All
games were stopped temporarily
while the sudden storm
passed. But the Lightning never
subsided, as the Brentwood
team went on to defeat Danville
9-8.
Sunday morning’s game
was tough, but the Lightning
proved up to the task, beating
Eureka Ice 5-3, then defeating
Santa Cruz’s own Beach Flats
Chivas 8-3.
