Local law enforcement and city offi
cials are urging residents to enjoy a fun
Fourth of July celebration, but given the
current wildfi re conditions all over the state,
police departments throughout East County
will be taking a zero-tolerance approach
to fi reworks this year.
“This year especially, there is no such
thing as ‘safe and sane’ fi reworks,” said Supervisor
Federal Glover recently. “Our fi refi
ghters are already stretched thin providing
mutual aid to other counties. I urge people
to cut down on personal fi reworks because
of the possibility of starting fi res.”

Antioch’s 10th annual Fireworks
Extravaganza will begin at 9 p.m. at
Second and A streets.
July 5
Oakley Cityhood Celebration Fireworks
will begin when the sky gets dark. The
sky will be lit up at Freedom Ball Fields,
corner of Neroly Road and O’Hara
Avenue.
July 11
The Fireworks display that kicks off the
annual CornFest weekend in downtown

“More fi res are reported on a typical
Fourth of July than on any other day of
the year, and fi reworks account for half of
those fi res,” said Contra Costa Fire Marshal
Richard Carpenter. “Each year our fi refi ghters
battle blazes and respond to injuries that
don’t need to occur. Fireworks in untrained
hands are an accident waiting to happen.
People should leave fi reworks to the professionals
and celebrate by enjoying professional
displays put on by trained individuals.”
Out on the water, the Sheriff Marine
Services Unit is also encouraging boaters to
enjoy their Fourth of July, but in a safe and
responsible manner. This weekend, the unit
will be enforcing the no-tow zone in Indian
Slough from Discovery Bay to Orwood Resort,
including Werner Cut.
Boating under the infl uence (BUI)
will be a high priority for Marine Services
deputies. Those arrested for BUI will face
the same consequences as those who drive
a motor vehicle under the infl uence, including
fi nes and a possible jail sentence.

local law enforcement agency (police or
sheriff). If you or someone you know has
fi reworks for disposal, call your local police
department or the fi re district’s main offi ce
at 925-941-3300 for instructions. Do not
bring fi reworks to a fi re station.

Antioch’s fan-favorite Fireworks Extravaganza will cap off the
city’s 10th annual Fourth of July celebration. The day’s event
will include children’s activities, live entertainment, a parade,
classic car show and great food. The fi reworks will begin about 9 p.m.
over the San Joaquin River.
