2008 Corn Fest is ready to pop
by Ruth Roberts
Staff Writer
When the estimated 50,000 visitors to
Brentwood’s annual CornFest converge on
downtown next week, scores of partygoers
will be thinking about good times, live music
and of course, corn.
Kathi Reed however, will be thinking
about something else.
“I’m focusing on the weather. My mantra
is 85, 85 and 85,” said Reed, president of
the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce. “It
would be nice if the weather cooperated,
but either way, it’ll be a great time.”
Sponsored by the Chamber in conjunction
with the city of Brentwood, this
year’s 16th annual event – to be held July
11, 12 and 13 on Second and Oak streets
– is a smorgasbord of arts and crafts, auctions,
food and beverage booths, and fi reworks.
Cook-offs and recipes for more
corn-inspired goodies than you can shake
an ear at will combine to create the city’s
most celebrated community event.
Mayor Bob Taylor says the Corn-
Fest is Brentwood’s annual opportunity to
shine.
“This once-a-year affair is what Brentwood
is known for and it’s our crowning
achievement,” said Taylor. I look forward,
as I do every year, to seeing lots of kids
and families and atmosphere. People come
from all over to the event. It’s more important
than you think. It’s a wonderful way to

promote out town.”
Given the current price of gasoline
and the trend toward what are being called
“stay-cations” – vacations taken close to
home – turnout for this popular three-day
event is expected to be high.
“Well, people are staying closer to
home, and because of that, we are expecting
a bigger-than-usual turnout,” said
Reed. “We’ll have all kinds of activities,
good food, tractor races for the kids, and
corn: corn shucking contests, corn eating
and corn in all its wonderful forms.”
Vendor space sold out fast for this
year’s event. More than 160 booths are set
to line the streets of downtown, and an information
alley will be set up in the parking
lot of the city offi ces, offering passersby a
look at the myriad services and organizations
in the area.
The much-anticipated fi reworks extravaganza
will kick off the event with a
display scheduled for Friday night downtown.
Big-name headliners such as country
icon Juice Newton will be on hand to perform
throughout the weekend.
The gates to the Brentwood CornFest
are open Friday from 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday
from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for
