for the states in 1973 and settled on the East Coast,
where Vietnamese cuisine was completely unknown
at the time. “I went to Cornell University and both of
us worked in the restaurant business until we decided
California was the right place to open a Vietnamese
business,” Bill said.
In 1981, the couple purchased a Vietnamese
market, eventually building it into a thriving business
in San Pablo, when another opportunity allowed
them to open their first restaurant in Albany. They
named the place Da Nang Vietnamese Restaurant
for the city where Kim was born and raised. They
have two grown children, one of whom works for the
Elephant Bar restaurant chain.
Da Nang Tourane Vietnamese Restaurant is
located at 4393 Hillcrest Ave. off Wildhorse Road
in Antioch’s Hillcrest Shopping Center. Da Nang
Tourane is open Sunday through Thursday from
11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11
a.m. to 11 p.m. The restaurant features take-out,
dine-in, catering and party accommodations. Call
