The original plan called for a public
car wash, but Kelsey Schall had something
a little more colorful in mind. While brainstorming
for community service projects
during a recent Interact Club retreat at
Camp Royal (Interact is a youth leadership
program affiliated with Brentwood Rotary)
the Heritage High School senior suggested
trading in the squeegees for paintbrushes.
“I proposed that we paint a mural for
Kaleidoscope,” said Kelsey, who is also a
volunteer with the cancer outreach program.
“I really wanted to put a lot of effort
into something so I could get a lot out of
it. It’s very important to me to feel the difference
and see the change.”
And the change is significant. The Byron
United Methodist Church (for which
Kaleidoscope is an outreach program),
donated space on one of the buildings
on its property for the mural project, and
through the efforts of both Kaleidoscope
and Interact volunteers, the painting is
nearly complete.
The multi-colored fresco, created to
resemble the variegated shapes and designs
of a kaleidoscope, takes up one side of
the building, and the logo “Life’s Changing
Patterns” is written in white across the
painting. On the other side of the structure
is a pink cancer ribbon accompanied by
the words “Hope” and “Connection.”
Both works of art, said Kelsey, represent
the healing power of love.
“Kaleidoscope is really less about
raising money for people with cancer – although
what can be accomplished with it is
amazing – and more about emotional support,”
said Kelsey. “The murals reflect that,
I think, and I just can’t wait for people to
see them.”
Kelsey and her small army of volunteers
have been working on the project for
the past two months and expect to put the
finishing touches on the paintings within
the next few weeks.
In the end, said Kelsey, the project
has done as much to brighten the lives of
the volunteers as it has the buildings themselves.
“We’ve all worked very hard on it
and it’s brought so much to all of us,” she
said. “I think that it’s a nice sentiment and
it looks fantastic. It’s something that will
last; something that will always be there.”
Kaleidoscope is a grassroots local organization
that provides support to people
and families living with cancer. Founded in
2003, the program has been the recipient
of countless community fundraisers. On
Sept. 12, the Daubin Memorial Golf Get
Together will be held at the Deer Ridge
Golf Course in Brentwood. All proceeds
from the third annual event will benefit
Kaleidoscope. Tickets are $125, and reservations
are still being accepted. For more
