individual BVAL title – that’s her goal. I
think she has a good chance. I’m really excited
to see what she can do.”
Other top members of the varsity
girls team include juniors Jamira Cox,
Chizoba Okodogbe and Fiona James, and
senior Ciera Walker.
“All of our girls are strong,” Ofstad
said. “I just want them to take things meet
by meet, but my goal for them is to win
at BVALs, go to NCS and do better than
last year, where they fi nished seventh.”
Senior Ryan DeVito leads a fast varsity
boys team. The second-year runner
gave up playing Wolverine football to join
the cross country team, much to Ofstad’s
delight.
“Ryan comes from a big football
family so I know that was hard for him
to give up, but he’s running so well right
now,” Ofstad said. “He’s starting some
harder training, and I think he’s defi nitely
ready to come out and do well this season.
His goal, individually, is to qualify
for state.”
Junior Nate Baker consistently fi nishes
“neck and neck” with DeVito, providing
Deer Valley with a strong “onetwo
punch,” according to Ofstad.

which Ofstad explained is constantly in

“My top seven pretty much changes
every race,” he said. “I actually have 21

level and be competitive, but I can only
run seven.”
Recently, Deer Valley’s varsity boys
team fi nished fourth at the Woodbridge Invitational
in Irvine, where more than 180
teams competed. The freshmen team, which
placed second, saw its own Joshua Potter win
the three-mile race with a time of 17:50.
