Crafting cartoons is good work if you can fi nd it. Just ask
Justin and Jared Fialho. For years, the East County siblings
and budding caricaturists have been tickling the funny bones
of friends and family with the adventures – and misadventures
– of their clever comic strip heroes. And they’ve been getting
paid for the privilege.
“Whenever I bring them (comic books) to school, people
buy them,” said Justin, 9, a fourth grader at Lone Tree Elementary
in Antioch. “We sell them for about 50 cents each,
sometimes a dollar. It pretty much depends on how many I
have with me.”
The brothers began penning their characters, and styles,
a few years ago when Jared, now a seventh grader at Dallas
Ranch Middle School, became interested in comic strips as the
result of a school assignment.
“When I was in second grade, we had to do
a project on panels, and then you wrote a little
something to describe it,” said Jared, 12.
“And I thought that was really fun, so I
started doing a comic book and I’ve been
doing it ever since.”
Justin soon followed his brother’s
lead, crafting his ideas for characters from
his personal storehouse of knowledge. “I
started drawing animals because that’s what
I’m good at,” said Justin. “I got the idea for
my fi rst superhero comic when I was watching
Superman on TV. And then after that, we went to
the zoo and I saw a hippopotamus.”
Enter Hippo Man, Justin’s superhero character: a halfman
and, you guessed it, half-hippopotamus, caped crusader
who fi nds himself in unusual situations.

Tom, one of Jared’s creations, is a kind of Everyman,
inquisitive teen. “I take a lot of my ideas from some experiences
I have had or my friends have had,” said Jared. “but
some of them just come from my imagination, too.”
