Reading festival cracks the books
All 25 county community libraries will
be featuring authors, programs and events
as part of the upcoming inaugural Contra
Costa County Reading Festival.
On Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May
17, the Oakley Library, located at Freedom
High School, 1050 Neroly Road, will feature
children’s author and illustrator Elisa
Kleven, plus journalist and author Peggy
Orenstein.
Kleven, author and illustrator of works
including “The Paper Princess,” will appear
at the Oakley Library on May 16 at 4 p.m.
On the same day, teens can participate in a
Read-a-thon at the Oakley Library beginning
at 3:30 p.m. Participants will read Orson
Scott Card’s “Ender’s Game,” then play
games, eat tacos and create a movie trailer,
poster or script based on the book.
The Brentwood Library’s Reading
Festival event will take place at Los Medanos
College Center, 101A Sand Creek
Road, on May 17 at noon. Contra Costa
County resident Penny Warner, author of
more than 40 books (including six mysteries
in the award-winning Connor Westphal
series), will be the guest. Warner’s “Mystery
of the Haunted Caves” won an Agatha
Award and an Anthony Award for Best Juvenile
Mystery.
At 2 p.m., the Brentwood Library will
host Caille Millner, author of the recently
published memoir “The Golden Road:
Notes on My Gentrifi cation.” Millner sits
on the editorial board of the San Francisco
Grace Hindes, H.I.S.

On May 17 at 11 a.m. in Oakley, author
Peggy Orenstein will appear at the
Oakley Library to talk about her books, including
“Waiting for Daisy: A Tale of Two
Continents, Three Religions, Five Infertility
Doctors, an Oscar, an Atomic Bomb, a Romantic
Night, and One Woman’s Quest to
Become a Mother.”
In addition to the author visits, the
Oakley library will hold a storytime for
preschoolers on the 17th at 10 a.m. Oakley

The library will provide refreshments, face
painting, a Count the Kisses guessing jar, a
craft table, book swap and a chance to buy
used books.
Oakley’s festival will close with a concert
by the bluegrass band Extended Roots
on Sunday, May 18 at 3:30 p.m.
