Heritage humbled
by Avi Burk
Staff Writer
The Heritage girls softball team
dominated Pittsburg for fi ve innings on
Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately for the
Patriots, they played seven innings.
The Patriots struck fi rst, scoring an
opportunistic run in the home half of the
third when Pirate pitcher Brooke Roger
uncorked a wild pitch, allowing right
fi elder Arzine Lee to score from third.
Heritage extended its lead to 2-0 in
the fi fth inning, and very nearly made it
a 3-0 game. Shortstop Katie Wiley led off
the inning with a line drive double into the
left-centerfi eld gap, but was thrown out at
the plate on a bang-bang play when she
tried to score from second on a Mickel
Escobar single. Escobar, who advanced to
second on the throw-through to the plate,
scored when designated hitter Deni Yandell
slapped an RBI single to left fi eld.
However, the Patriots imploded in
the top of the sixth inning, making several
defensive mistakes that cost the team
four runs and the win.
Pittsburg second baseman Michelle
Suarez got the Pirate rally started,
scratching out an infi eld single after fouling
off offering after offering from Escobar.
Then what appeared to be a routine
pop fl y just behind third base fell in for
Pittsburg right fi elder Alyssa Steward,
and rather than eating the ball and getting
it back to her pitcher, Wiley hurried
an off-target throw to second base. The
ball rolled all the way into the right fi eld
corner, allowing both runners to score
and tying the game at 2-2.
The Pirates then dinked a pair of balls
down the left fi eld line out of the reach of
Patriot left fi elder Kara Babo, who, in the
eyes of head coach Ron Rivers, misplayed
the two balls, each of which went for two
bases and allowed Pittsburg to score the
go-ahead run.
With two outs and a runner at second
base, Roger helped her own cause with a
line drive triple down the right fi eld line,
plating the Pirates’ fi nal run and giving
herself a two-run cushion to work with.
After being retired in order in the
sixth, the Patriots rallied in the seventh
inning, putting the tying run on base with
just one out. But neither runner advanced
any farther, as Roger induced a Yandell
pop-up for the second out and caught
Christina Coppel looking on a game-ending
strike.
“At the moment, I’m frustrated with
the play of the girls,” Rivers said immediately
after the 4-2 loss. “But I’d rather
get it all out now, hoping that we can still
get into NCS – we have a lot of stuff to
work on.”
