Squeals of delight, clapping hands and broad
smiles from their guests made Lions Club volunteers a
happy bunch, as hundreds of developmentally disabled
kids and adults had a blast at the 29th annual Special
Kids Day held last Saturday at the DeLuna Ranch in
Brentwood.
“This was the biggest and best event yet,” said organizer
Bill Ridle. At one point, he counted more than
500 cars in the parking lot and his wife, Darlene, said
the event ran out of registration badges after 1,300 were
given out. The DeLuna Ranch is a perfect place for
Special Kids Day: 10 acres with lots of shade, a huge
pole barn with two stages and plenty of parking.
Around 100 members of District 4-C3 Lions Clubs
from Discovery Bay to Berkeley converged on the De-
Luna Ranch to set up game booths with lots of prizes,
face painting and beading. Lions cooked and dispensed
hamburgers, hotdogs and chips, plenty of water and soft
drinks, cotton candy, shaved ice and entertainment.
For the second year, “Karaoke” Joe Dillon teamed
with Elvis impersonator Sonny Dryden to knock the
crowd’s socks off with karaoke entertainment and all
the Elvis classics. They were helped out by Red West,
Gloria Cummings and Janice Clardy, who belted out
their own favorites in warm-up acts for the Elvis show.
Later, Special Kids took over the karaoke venue and
kept Dillon busy cranking out the tunes.
Joyce Butz from Martinez brought Breann, her 24year-old
disabled daughter to the event and said, “It’s

Special Kids Day for three years, said, “I like it here,” a
gross understatement, according to her mother.
Maggie DeLuna and husband Rene, both Brentwood
Lions, have opened their ranch to the Lions district
for the past three years. “When Rene and I bought
this place, we had no idea we would actually even live
here,” Maggie said. “Now, I wouldn’t trade this place
for anything. There is nothing more rewarding than
having all these Special Kids out here enjoying themselves.

More than 1,300 Special Kids and their supporters
attended the Lions Club’s Special Kids Day last
Saturday at the DeLuna Ranch in Brentwood. At

Yesenia Camancho, caregiver for Julie Malagrade,
agreed with the DeLunas. “It’s beautiful,” she said with
a big smile. “I’m so happy to be here, and Julie is having
such a good time.”
Discovery Bay’s Jane Perry, soon to be the new
governor of Lions District 4-C3, was all smiles when
she talked about the success of this year’s occasion.
“I’ve been attending Special Kids Day since we held
it at the Smith Family Farm in 1990. It’s a marvelous
event – you never see an unhappy face.” Perry will be
installed as governor in Thailand later this year when
the Lions hold their international convention.
