ecosystem restoration and Delta
sustainability.
CCWD is the largest urban water
agency to rely solely on the Delta as
its drinking-water supply. The district
has identifi ed water quality projects for
Delta sustainability that are “ready to
go” and need the directed funding in
SBXX1, since the Senate and Assembly
versions of the proposed state fi scal
year 2008-09 budget contain minimal
funding for water resources projects.
“This represents the fi nal
opportunity in the special legislative
session on water to direct funding, on
an urgency basis, from Propositions 50,
1E, and 84 toward critical projects that
produce statewide benefi ts,” said CCWD
General Manager Walter J. Bishop.
“CCWD commends the Democratic
leadership for recognizing the urgent
nature of funding emergency projects
in the Delta and moving forward with
immediate action.” With the future of
the Delta at risk, SBXX1 also provides
funding for water quality/ecosystem
demonstration projects such as Franks
Tract and fi sh screens at Clifton Court
Forebay.
According to a CCWD press
release, “These projects are critical
actions to move Delta improvements
forward, are based on sound science,
and enjoy broad stakeholder support.”
Dow grants
available
The Dow Chemical Company’s
Community Advisory Panel (CAP),
in conjunction with Dow’s Pittsburg
Operations, is accepting applications
for its third annual competitive grant
program. Grants are expected to range
from $2,500 to $5,000. Prospective East
County grantees must focus on education,
science or the environment.
Applicants must meet certain criteria
to be eligible. A packet that includes
criteria, guidelines, frequently asked
questions and the application form may
be obtained by e-mailing pdeutsche@
dow.com. The deadline for submitting
the application is Aug. 26, and grant
winners will be announced in early October.
CAP is composed of 14 members
of the East County community who
serve to advise Dow on issues affecting
both the community and Dow’s operations
in the community. Members of
the CAP Grants Committee will rank
applications based on sustainability,
overall impact and benefi t to the community,
emphasis, and the ratio of administrative
costs to actual benefi t.
