Policy from page 1A
argued that Fredrickson is indeed an employee of the
district. “All directors are public offi cials, and it is the
board’s policy that directors are employees of the district,”
said Gilmore, adding that while Fredrickson has
waived the monthly stipend, she does receive the health
benefi ts the district provides.
Local resident Karen Cox said that the amount of
time and money spent over the issue is ridiculous. “This
is pathetic,” she said. “All of this could have been resolved
a long time ago, and for you (the board) to have
spent over $8,000 on this is a total waste of money and
it’s uncalled for.”
Director Felix Musco, however, said that the amount
of time and money spent answering and researching
Fredrickson’s questions and concerns is exactly what the
district is -- and should be -- required to do.
“I don’t think that we have wasted a penny of the
district’s money,” said Musco. “I believe we have acted
appropriately and responsibly to the requests of one director.”
With the amendment to the ethics policy, Fredrickson
did not make immediately clear whether or not
she would comply with the driver’s license requirement.
Calls made to her offi ce were not returned.
It remains to be seen what the district can or will
do should Fredrickson not comply with the district’s
amendment to the ethics policy. It is Gilmore’s wish that
Fredrickson would simply meet the board’s new terms
and allow the issue to be put to rest.
“I think we’re all just hoping that this resolves the
issue, that everyone complies and that we can get on
with the business of running the district,” said Gilmore.
“Hopefully that will be the outcome.”

Election from page 1A
President Kathy Slightam said she won’t be
seeking re-election, citing family and home
commitments as the reason she’ll forgo another
four-year term.
“I have three soon-to-be teenagers that
I feel I need to be home for,” said Slightam,
“so I’m going to have to pass the hat on to
someone else. But I will say it’s a very exciting
time to be on the board; there are lots

Seen on Kilimanjaro
Dr. Todd Wedeking of Delta Bay Dental in Brentwood and his wife Iris Rave recently
went above and beyond to be Seen with the Press. They scaled the highest peak in
Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which rises 19,340 feet above sea level. Thanks, Iris
and Todd, for sharing with your Hometown Weekly Newspaper the rarifi ed air of, as you put
it in your e-mail, “The best vacation we’ve ever taken.”
of great and exciting things happening. I’ve
enjoyed my time on the board. It’s all good,
and I have no regrets. And who knows? You
might see me in another four years.”
School Board Member Ken Silman
will be running for re-election and said he
is looking forward to a second term on the
board. “There are a couple of reasons I’m
running again,” said Silman. “I believe we
have done a lot of good work and are head-
ing in the right direction. We’ve reduced
turnover in our classrooms, seen our test
scores rise, and have a superintendent that
is doing a great job.
“I want to help see that progress continue
– and we also haven’t had a lot of continuity
on the school board, which I think
that’s an important part of growth. You
don’t want to have to start over every time.
I’d like to be here for a while.”
