Kettlebells from page 9B
Neal works out for 45 minutes a day,
but the exercise isn’t constant for that time
period. Breaks in the routine are essential.
That’s why he stresses learning to use
kettlebells with the assistance of a certifi ed
trainer.
“Like any workout, there is a chance
for injury,” Neal said. “As soon as the kettlebell
is in your hands, it’s alive. It takes precise
moves to use it effectively, or you can
hurt yourself.”
Neal, who is the only certifi ed kettlebells
instructor in East Contra Costa County,
has worked with more than a dozen
clients using kettlebell routines through his
personalized physical training program Per.

“I’m a teacher by profession, but I’m
also a teacher by heart,” said Neal. “When
I see people light up when they realize they
can do it – they can lift these weights and
see how strong they’ve become – that’s what
makes it worth it.”
There are no age or gender limitations
for kettlebell workouts. Neal said celebrities
Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz have
jumped onto the kettlebell bandwagon,
so women shouldn’t be frightened by the
weight or the appearance of the kettlebell.
Age isn’t a factor, either. The physical education
