Kettlebells from page 10B
School recently purchased kettlebells for
the students to use. Neal said he’s excited to
teach them how to use kettlebells in class in
the future.
Neal also said that kettlebells are a
cost-effective workout: “We’ve made working
out too complicated with high-tech
machines and fancy workouts. You don’t
need a membership for this. It is a one-time
investment, and you get a total body workout.
It’s easy to store, too. You can keep it in
your closet or garage.”
You don’t have to buy multiple sets,
either. Just one kettlebell is enough for a
workout, but you can use two at a time if
you want. The weights start at four kilograms
(about nine pounds), and increase by
four kilograms. The heaviest kettlebell is 48
kilograms (106 pounds).
Neal also said that kettlebells are a
“time-consolidating” workout for people
in East County who commute because you
just pick it up and go. You can use it at any
time of day, and you don’t need to use it for
more than an hour at a time. It’s also good
for people who don’t like to go to the gym
and have others watch them as they work
out. “It’s a one-hand gym for all around fi tness,”
said Neal.
Since a kettlebell is essentially a cannonball
with a handle, Neal said it is easy
to become intimidated by a kettlebell’s appearance,
but that the exercise is worth it.
Some people paint their kettlebells so that
they appear less menacing.
Neal works with clients on an individual
basis or trains with groups of up to four.
Michael Ditmars, M.D.
General Surgeon
“I chose Sutter Delta Medical Center because I was
looking for a pleasant community to raise my family in while
practicing medicine, but this is no ‘community hospital.’ The
quality of equipment, care, and services here are equal to
anything you’d expect in a major metropolitan area.”
General Surgeon Michael Ditmars, M.D. specializes
in the use of advanced technology and minimally invasive
procedures designed to reduce scarring, decrease
recovery time, and lower the risks associated with surgery.
He believes that while every good surgeon has to be great
in the operating room, it is a surgeon’s relationship with his
patients that makes him excellent.

Dave Neal uses the kettlebell in a move
called the swing, a low-power exercise
that involves swinging the kettlebell
between your legs and lifting it in
front of you in a swinging motion.
He meets with clients where it’s most convenient
for them, at their homes or at a park.
He starts off with a consultation to see what
the clients’ goals are, and then starts them
off with a 15-minute workout. After fi ve
sessions, clients know all the basic moves so
they can practice on their own or continue
training with Neal’s guidance.
