lives of Ugandan children

On the fi nal day of a mission trip to
Uganda last year, a shy little boy sidled up
to Pastor John McAuley and in a quiet, tentative
voice asked him for something most
of us take for granted: a proper bed.
“It was heartbreaking. Here was this
child with this sad lonely face, and I asked
him if he was all right,” said McAuley, one
of the pastors of Orchard Church in Brentwood.
“And he looked at me and said,
‘Please sir, do you think you could buy me
a new mattress?’ Imagine something as fundamental
as a clean place to sleep. It was an
experience I could not forget.”
Although the church group was out
of available funds, McAuley promised the

little boy, who lives in the Ugandan boarding
school that McAuley’s team visited, that
he would do what he could. But once he got
home, McAuley’s vision changed.
“I realized I couldn’t provide for just
one child when there are hundreds like him
at the school. So I decided I would make
it a year-long project to buy new beds for
everyone – 450 in all,” said McAuley.
A new twin mattress purchased in Uganda
costs a modest $20, and through the donations
of the Orchard Church congregation
and other supporters, McAuley has raised
enough money for approximately 100 beds.
But much more is needed. “People have
been very generous,” McAuley said, “but
$9,000 (for the 450 beds) is a big number, so
