Scratch Draft Trios champs drink it in
by Andy Antczak
Correspondent
You can shut the books on another exciting
season of the Scratch Draft Trios League
… case closed.
It was a wild night this past Monday at
Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood. The closest
race in league history ended with a surprise
fi nish as a team rose out of the ashes to taste
the sweet Brew of victory. However, for every
rise there must be a fall, leaving several teams
snooping around for answers.
No more ten-pins, no more splits, no
more spillage on dirty hits. League’s … out…
for … summer!
Headed into Monday night, the league
was anyone’s to claim. Six teams, exactly half
of the league, stood within 14.5 points of the
leaders, Cimentar Corp, and with two position
rounds and 56-points up for grabs, all
of them had visions of grandeur. But for two
teams, those dreams would quickly turn from
visions to delusions.
Well, they had no choice, all those keglers
and rollers. Makin’ all that noise, ’cause
they just didn’t look like bowlers.
In the fi rst featured match of the night,
Cimentar Corp fi tted Garner Investigative
Agency for a pair of cement bowling shoes,
dispatching them 23 to 5, all but mathematically
eliminating the defending league champs.
Meanwhile, Coyote Brewery sneaked into second
place with a 17 to 11 win over Team 10,
thanks in large part to games of 236 and 223
from Tammy Watt. However, the Brew Crew
still slipped six points further behind the leaders,
leaving itself a fi ne margin for error in the
fi nal position round.
Well, we can’t quite crown ya, can’t fi nd
the throne. So if it still suits ya, better stay
in the zone.
With a 14.5 point cushion on second and
18.5 points ahead of third, Cimentar Corp
needed just 10 of 28 points in the fi nal round
to clinch the title. Unfortunately, they were the
only team that failed to break 590 all night.
Led by team captain and anchor Aaron Pawloski,
who fi red a 222 and a 233 in the match,
Coyote Brewery stole 23 points and sent Cimentar
Corp stumbling into third place. But
the drama wasn’t quite over, as Team 10 was
still within shouting range of the top. Games
of 628 and 681 vaulted Team 10 to a 25-point
set, but the runners-up fell two points shy of
the promised land, as Coyote Brewery hung
on for the title.
Well, we got no pins left and we got no time,
but unlike Alice Copper, I can fi nd a rhyme.
With another Scratch Draft Trios season
in the books, Bay Area sports fans must now
turn to one of the local MLB teams … may
we mercifully suggest the A’s. But fi rst, a few
postseason awards.
This season saw The Visually Impaired
(no pun intended), Garner Investigative
Agency and Coyote Brewery all drink from
the sweet tap of victory (pun intended). Three
bowlers, Aaron Pawloski (2), Darrell Hanson
and Scott Deaver managed perfect games on
the sometimes tricky modifi ed oil pattern.
Xan Halog recorded both the woman’s high
game, 268, and high series, 928. Halog also
paced the women with a 200 average for the
year. On the men’s side, Pawloski edged Mark
Mazzulla by three pins with a 1,034 high
set. The men’s high average asked to remain
anonymous with a 218 clip.
League’s … out … for … summer!
League’s … out … for ... ever!
Or at least until next fall … whichever
comes fi rst. Case closed!
