Library awarded grants
The Oakley Library has aggressively
been pursuing grants to enhance its materials
collection and library programs, and
over the past three months it has received a
total of three grants.
First Five Contra Costa awarded
$5,000 to the library in June to fund multicultural
programs targeted at children from
infancy to age 5. The fund will provide for
approximately 19 programs for children
over the next year.
The library also received nearly $5,000
from the city of Oakley’s Economic Development
Grant funds to enhance its collection
of books about successfully starting and

will pay for some 200 new books plus a series
of small-business workshops focused on
planning, fi nancing and marketing.
In April, the Oakley library was one of
3,000 libraries across the country selected to
receive a We the People Bookshelf grant,
which provided 17 free hardcover editions
of classic books based on the theme Created
Equal.

once the details have been fi nalized.

County seeks commissioners
The Contra Costa County Board of
Supervisors is seeking applicants for the following
District III commission seats:
Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Board
Two seats are open. Members must
have a professional interest in or personal
commitment to alleviating problems related
to drug and alcohol abuse.
County Library Commission
One alternate seat is open. Commission
members serve in an advisory capacity
to the Board of Supervisors and the county
librarian.
Juvenile Systems Planning
Advisory Committee
One seat is open. The committee ini-
tially started to plan for and fund a replacement
juvenile hall, identify juvenile systems
needs, and develop and maintain a continuum
of services for delinquent youth.
Mobile Home Advisory Committee
One tenant seat is open. The committee
advises the Board of Supervisors on policies
and issues relating to mobile home parks in
the unincorporated area of the county.

Seen in the Dead Sea
Oakley resident Sher Widger was recently Seen with the
Press around Israel, including Tel Aviv, Nazareth, Cana,
Tiberias, Mount of Beatitudes and the Sea of Galilee.
We’re happy to report that Sher and her Hometown Weekly
Newspaper, above, were alive and kicking while fl oating in the
Dead Sea.
