Supe hopefuls ready to rumble
by Dave Roberts
Staff Writer
Gary Agopian has not made an offi -
cial announcement yet, awaiting offi cial
word from the county Election Department,
but he’s planning to run an active
campaign for Federal Glover’s seat on
the county Board of Supervisors.
Agopian came in third in the District
5 supervisorial primary on June 3,
getting 20.7 percent of the votes. Finishing
fi rst was two-term incumbent
Glover with 33.5 percent of the vote,
followed by Erik Nunn with 26.9 percent.
Because none of the candidates in
the fi ve-person race received more than
50 percent of the votes, the top two
vote-getters – Glover and Nunn – were
set for a runoff in the November general
election. But Nunn died in a plane
crash on June 28, resulting in Agopian
replacing him in the runoff, per the election
rules.
“I had mentally made a complete
shift. When the election’s over and
you’re on the losing end, you start
thinking about what’s next, what do I
do,” said Agopian. “We were focusing
primarily on getting my wife a teaching
position in the Pittsburg Unifi ed School
District and focusing on (my) real estate
business.
“And then I got that phone call
(about Nunn’s death). It was stunning.
I am mostly concerned about the families
and the kids, being any help and
support we can be. We have prayed for
them and will continue to be supportive
any way we can. I wanted to let them
have the time they need to go through
the grieving time period.”
Agopian, an Antioch Unifi ed
School District Board member who
received endorsements in the primary
from most of the City Council members
in Antioch and Oakley, believes Glover
is not supported by most voters, who
deserve the opportunity to vote for an
alternative.
“Sixty-seven percent of the voters

wanted a different choice from the twoterm
incumbent,” said Agopian. “Out
of respect for them and respect for Erik,
who wanted change, it’s something I
need to do.
“My name is on (the ballot), so
it’s a question of do I want to be active
(campaigning) or not – and the answer
is yes. I need to pull together a top-rate
campaign. It’s one-to-one in the general
election, so I need to be credible.”
Nunn and Glover each spent more
than $100,000 during the primary election,
while Agopian, who got a late

start in the race, spent about $20,000.
He’s not sure how much he’ll need to
raise to run a credible campaign in the
general election.
“Is it $50,000, $70,000, $100,000,
$150,000? I don’t know,” he said. “I
am going to have to be more aggressive
about fundraising, because there’s
a larger audience in the general than the
primary. We won Antioch (in the primary),
but I am sensitive that this is a
district-wide campaign and will be fully
