scores quite a bit.”
Brittany Edwards can attest to that. She’s shaved fi ve
to six strokes off her game this season simply by honing
her short game. “We’ve been working on chipping so much
– putting the ball closer to the hole,” Brittany said. “I’ve
been able to one-putt a lot more instead of two-putting.”
Brittany has medaled in seven of her team’s eight
matches this season. In the sixth match, however, she shared
the honor with her younger sister, Haley, a sophomore.
Haley Edwards, Victoria Leon and senior co-captain
Jennifer Wang have all played the No. 2 position for Deer
Valley. “Our No. 2 rotates quite a bit,” coach Edwards said.
“Golf is an up-and-down sport and so that refl ects our
standings.”
Haley Edwards, according to her coach, “brings an
enthusiasm and determination to the team. She’s very upbeat
all the time. She’s a real natural athlete with a lot of
skill.”
Leon and Wang are both highly motivated students,
excelling in honors classes, and both take an intellectual approach
to the game of golf.
Leon, coach Edwards said, is a very a good putter who
is working to increase her distance off the tee. Wang is a vocal
leader, who “makes everybody feel accepted.” Edwards
is working with Wang on improving her consistency from
match to match.
Now in the second half of their season, the Lady Wolverines
are getting closer to their team goal of scoring 200
in nine holes. Deer Valley’s lowest team score thus far was a
208 against Heritage in its third match.
“My hopes are to continually lower our scores,” coach
Edwards said. “We have four to fi ve girls that can score in
the 80s, and two girls, Brittany and Haley, who can hit in
the 70s. If everything goes right, we could fi nd ourselves in
a nice spot for NCS.”

day, in which the team placed sixth. Amador Valley won
the event.
Brittany Edwards led Deer Valley with an 82. Haley
Edwards posted an 85, Leon fi nished with an 83, Wang and
Allison Isaacson both scored a 95, while Melissa Wilkerson
had a 104.
“I was hoping for four of our girls to score in the 80s.
We still have a lot of work to do,” coach Edwards said. “But
it was a good tournament. It’s wonderful that Lone Tree allows
us to play there. It’s nice that we have a community of
golfers that supports our team.”
BOYFL Falcons
grind out W’s
The Brentwood Oakley Falcon football teams took on the
San Lorenzo Valley Cougars last Saturday, and three of the fi ve
divisions toppled the competition.
Mitey Mite Joshua Wishom’s 61-yard touchdown run
highlighted the Falcons’ 30-8 victory over the visiting Cougars.
Deseaus La Marque supplemented the scoring, bouncing off
multiple defenders to power in from fi ve yards out in the second
quarter. La Marque totaled 29 yards on the scoring drive, which
started with an 18-yard run by Ryan Iannaccone.
The Falcon defense held the Cougars in check for nearly the
entire game, fi nally surrendering a touchdown in the fi nal minutes.
The defense was led by Christopher Combs, Joey Fulcher,
Jacob Boyd and Paris Armour.
“The kids came out fi red up and ready to play today, but I
was more impressed with their sportsmanship. There was none of
the trash talking that sometimes happens when a team gets a big
lead. I’m proud of how they all exhibited the spirit of Pop Warner
football,” said Coach Ray Martinez.
The Junior Pee Wees improved their record to 4-0 with a 33-6
win over the Cougars. Defensive Back Devin Buchanan led the
way with two interceptions and four tackles. Running back Cody
Maghuyop gained 118 yards on the ground and scored two TDs,
and running back Conner Barreras amassed more than 50 yards
rushing and receiving, and scored one TD on the ground and one
through the air. The scoring was made possible by the strong Oline
of Preston Rosenbaum, Josh Diaz, Frankie Veal, Alex Robinson,
Gabriel Olveda, Nick Mosqueira and Fazion La Marque.
Falcon Quarterback Anthony Hazel added two touchdown
passes, one to Tate Lunger and the other to Conner Barreras. Hazel
also hit Quincy Smith and Izaac Ooghe on long pass plays to
set up touchdowns.
The Falcon Pee Wees outplayed the Cougars to the tune of
27-7, featuring 165 yards rushing.
