Get in the flow
The Delta Community Presbyterian
Church, 1900 Willow Lake
Road in Discovery Bay, is hosting
a Red Cross Blood Drive on Saturday,
Oct. 25 from 11:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
According to Pastor Larry,
“This will be the fourth blood drive
held at our church, and each time
we have more donors come in.
This is an excellent opportunity
in our community. The convenience
of having the blood drive on
a Saturday, better communication
on our part, and the level of interest
in the community have helped
contribute to our success.”
Donors must be at least 17
years of age, weigh at least 110
pounds and bring photo ID).
Those planning to give blood may
make an appointment by calling
the church at 925-634-0184 or just
stop by and wait their turn. Child
care and refreshments will be provided.
Avoid hazards this
Halloween season
Halloween is just over the horizon,
and it’s not too early to keep in mind
our kids’ safety on that frightfully fun
night.
When choosing a Halloween costume,
give priority to outfi ts that are
bright and visible at night. If your
child’s costume is dark, embellish
it with refl ective tape
so it stands out. Carrying
a fl ashlight can also
help your child be more
visible.
Supervision
is another key to
safety. Make Halloween
more memorable
by going with
your kids. This includes
older kids
who might consider
themselves too
mature for this
kiddie activity,
but would be glad to tag along
– and probably wind up having fun, too.
Halloween is a night when teens can get
into considerable mischief. If they don’t
want you to accompany them, it might
be a sign that they’ve outgrown the innocent
side of the tradition.
When driving through neighborhoods
on Halloween night, slow down
and be alert. Many kids don’t factor in
the risk of crossing the streets. Their
costumes can limit their peripheral vision
or ability to hear. If your own
costume limits these abilities, remove
it before operating
a vehicle.
Be aware of
stranger danger.
Resources such
as the Megan’s
Law Web Site
(www.meganslaw.ca.gov)
can assist
you in making
good parental
decisions about
where to take your
trick-or-treater.
Identify a designated
driver. If your celebration
involves adult functions, be aware that
the fi nes and penalties for an intoxicated
driving conviction are severe. You
could pay cab fare multiple times over
for the cost of a DUI. Worse, you could
be involved in a tragically life-changing
event.
