‘Death’ comes alive
Antioch’s Hapgood Theatre Company
launches its second season with Arthur
Miller’s powerhouse classic “Death
of a Salesman,” directed by Artistic Director
Josy Miller. One of America’s greatest
playwrights, Arthur Miller’s career spanned
seven decades, three continents, innumerable
genres and earned him such profound
respect that the night he died, the lights on
Broadway were dimmed.
Miller wrote “Death of a Salesman” in
just six weeks. Premiered in 1949, the play
made such an impact that it was awarded
the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the New York
Critic’s Circle Award and the Tony Award
for Best New Play, the fi rst piece ever to win
all three honors.
The story of Willy Loman, who clings
to his belief in the American Dream as he
struggles to make ends meet, “Death of
a Salesman” is as poignant and timely in
2008 as it was when it debuted. As ABC
Radio noted upon the play’s 50th-anniversary
Broadway revival in 1999, “Death of a
Salesman is a great play and one that everyone
should see at least once in a lifetime.”
