we’re trying to get a little creative.”
One way the pastor has gotten more resourceful
is through community fundraising efforts. The
Orchard Church will be hosting a bake-sale fundraising
event outside Mancini’s Sleepworld in
Brentwood on May 31. Proceeds from the event,
called Beds from the Bay, will go directly toward
the purchase of the mattresses.
“We’re very excited about the project and our
ability – and the public’s ability – to help these children,
many of whom are orphans,” said McAuley.
“Twenty dollars is a fairly reasonable amount.”
A team from Orchard Church will be returning
to Uganda in January. The plan is to have all the
money in place when the group arrives, and to purchase
the mattresses in the nearby town of Campala.
While McAuley won’t be able to personally
deliver the mattresses to the young boy and his
schoolmates (he’ll be on a mission trip to Mexico
at the time), his heart and good wishes will most
certainly be with them. “To be able to do something
like this, and know that we are following
through on a promise, is just huge,” he said.
“We found out that of all the missions that
have gone out to Uganda (and the school), none
have been able to make the trip back. We’ve made
a long-term commitment to this project and this
group, and it feels great.”
The Orchard Church event at Mancini’s
Sleepworld will be held on May 31 outside the
store from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sleepworld is located
at 5461 Lone Tree Way in Brentwood. For more
information or to make a donation, call 925-642-
