First-place Freedom finds way to win
Last Thursday, Freedom’s
Billy Wardell and Liberty’s Drew
Gagnon treated East County to a
pitching revival, as the two hurlers
threw spectacular games. But a
costly fi elding error by the Lions,
combined with some heady base
running by Falcon fi rst baseman
Justin D’amico, proved the difference
in the 1-0 Freedom win.
“You have to be able to pinpoint
your pitches. You can’t walk
people and you can’t bean people
because you know on the other
side he’s not going to do that,”
Wardell said of his match-up with
Gagnon, one of the most highly
regarded pitching prospects in
all of Northern California. “He
mixes up his speeds and throws
a lot of breaking balls in fastball
counts. He really challenges batters
and makes them guess.”

game shutout. Wardell faced just
23 batters in the game – two over
the minimum for a seven-inning
contest – and didn’t allow a runner
to advance past fi rst base. He
struck out seven and brought a
perfect game into the fi fth inning,

the no-hit bid when Nick Wightman
blooped a single down the

Locals enjoy
triathlon

Two months ago, Brentwood’s Daryl Sobolik,
54, and his daughter Christine, 16, came to the realization
that as far East County residents, they enjoyed
the unique opportunity to participate in three
divergent and geographically dependent sports
– snowboarding, dirt bike riding and wakeboarding
– all in the same day. On April 27, the pair, along
with Christine’s friends Shannon Schelbert, 16, and
Brigette Bergeron, 17, took advantage of that opportunity
and pulled off a unique triathlon.
The quartet began its journey in the wee hours
of the morning, leaving Brentwood at 5 a.m. for
Kirkwood Ski Resort in Tahoe, and fi nished the
odyssey 16 hours later after hitting the slopes at
Kirkwood, motocross riding at Sand Hill and wakeboarding
on the Delta.
“We sustained no injuries, but we were all pretty
tired by the end of the day, and after we got back
we still had to unload everything – we were all ready
to drop at that point,” an exhausted Daryl Sobolik
said after completing the triathlon. “Everybody
agreed that it was worth doing, and (the girls) want
to do it again next year and do it bigger – either include
more people in it or do it for a cause. The girls
were talking about raising money to benefi t breast
cancer research.”
