Knightsen
Good old days are alive
and well in Knightsen
By contemporary standards, Knightsen is a one-of-a-kind town.
Impelled by the desire to retain the small-town virtues of independence
and close-knit community, citizens of this century-old, historic
railroad town have resisted the headlong rush toward suburban
development. Knightsen is a living, breathing document of an earlier
and more genial time.
No stoplights interfere with the easy pace of Knightsen, where a
smile, a wave and a handshake remain the rule, not the exception.
Roughly 1,000 residents share 14 square miles of land. No housing
tracts threaten Knightsen’s identity. While town leaders support
2-acre parcels, the current 10-acres-per-parcel mandate will remain
until drainage issues are addressed.
The town’s many ranchettes are home to more horses than
humans, and its farms grow incomparable fruits and vegetables.
Several horse arenas and boarding facilities are open to the public
for equestrian activities. Igonzo Pygmy Goat Farm raises and sells
registered pygmy goats; the finest heirloom tomatoes in Northern
California can be purchased at Smith Family Farms’ roadside stand;
and Knightsen Honey Company is always buzzing with activity.

vate ski lake make Knightsen a magnet for water-sports enthusiasts,
and a private airport is home to ultra-light flier groups. The annual
Knightsen Days event draws East County folks from all over. The
event boasts a car and tractor show plus an open-air, evening screening
of a film on the history of the town.
The Knightsen School District, renowned for the waiting lists
generated by children from outside communities desiring to transfer
in, opened its second school – Old River Elementary – just this year.
Knightsen residents recently voted to make the town a Community
Services District to gain more advisory control over its own
affairs. The Knightsen Town Advisory Council, authorized and appointed
by the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors, advises the board
on issues from housing to roads to water rights in its ongoing mission
to preserve the “Good Old Days Since 1898.” Council members are
Ken Smith, Janice Lindgren, Tom Jepsen, Linda Weeks and Alvin Simas,
Jr. For more information on Knightsen, visit www.knightsen.net.
