High Schools
High Schools in East County continue to evolve
– in numbers and focus. In 2008, two new specialty
high schools opened in Antioch, joining
the five existing high schools in the Antioch and Liberty
high school districts. Classes at the new Dozier-Libbey
Medical High School tie into health science, since its
students hope to enter the medical field once they complete
college. Students who wish to pursue performing arts can
do so at the new Delta Academy, and Antioch has plans
for a third specialty high school for students interested in
studying law and criminal justice.
This year, the Liberty Union High School District’s
Academic Performance Index scores were the most improved
in Contra Costa County. 2008 was a banner
year for Heritage High School, which opened its doors
in 2005 with a student population of only freshman
and sophomores, as the newest high school in the district
handed out diplomas to its first senior class.
To accommodate the anticipated population influx
in the next few years, plans are in the mix to build
another high school, scheduled to open in 2012, in the
vicinity of the border of Oakley and Brentwood.
