lesson you can reach out and touch. Black
Diamond’s 65 miles of trails also afford some
of the most challenging terrain and gratifying
scenery in the area – not the least of which is
a close-up view of the craggy grandeur of the
East Bay’s iconic Mt. Diablo.
Mt. Diablo State Park, a mere 25-minute
drive from downtown Brentwood, has it
all: hiking in elevations approaching 4,000
feet, horseback riding, camping, and on the
summit, an incomparable view of Northern
California, from Mt. Lassen in the north to
Mt. Whitney in the south, from the Farallon
Islands off the coast to Yosemite in the east.
And speaking of outdoor adventure, most
Bay Area recreation guides tell you that a drive
to Yosemite or Tahoe will take you at least
four hours. From East County, it’s three.
