for the season, one market
remains open. Why sample
East County’s best produce
only once a year when the
bounty of our soil is never far
from your taste buds? Pittsburg
offers a market, located
at Railroad Avenue between
Third and Fifth streets, every
Saturday of the year (weather
permitting), so there is no excuse
for missing out on quality
home-grown goods such as
corn from Brentwood’s G&S
Farms.
The local supermarket
offers plenty of produce
already picked and packaged
for your dining pleasure, but
East County offers foodies the
special experience of gathering
their own delectables straight
from the orchard. If you have
time, go pick Chinook cherries
at Pease Ranch or pluck a
peach from Mike’s U-Pick.
During the summer, more
than 30 produce stands open
up to offer the most scrumptious
fruits, vegetables, jams,
nuts, herbs and seasonings,
and oils and vinegars. Stands
continue to get bigger and offer
a greater variety of products
every year. In 2007, the county
passed an ordinance allowing
growers to sell items not grown
on the premises, such as water
and soft drinks, along with
their home-grown goods. A
